The Maid Saw One Document That Could Stop the Virelli Wedding

“Don’t let her open that.”

Damian Moretti’s voice cut through the corridor just as my fingers lifted the cover of the black folder.

For several seconds, no one moved.

The music from the conservatory continued behind us.

Hundreds of guests were waiting for Damian to return to the altar.

Alessia Virelli, Rafael’s younger sister, was standing beneath an arch of white roses believing the man she loved had stepped away because of a minor emergency.

He hadn’t.

He was staring at me like I had a weapon in my hands.

Rafael stepped closer.

“Open it, Lina.”

Adrian Bell, the family attorney, tried to intervene.

“Rafael, you should think very carefully before allowing an employee to involve herself in private family matters.”

Rafael didn’t even look at him.

“You grabbed her wrist over that folder.

Damian abandoned his own ceremony because she touched it.

I’m thinking very carefully.”

I opened the cover.

The first page bore the familiar silver seal of Silver County.

CERTIFIED RECORD OF MARRIAGE.

Damian Moretti.

Nora Elise Hayes.

Five years earlier.

I scanned the certification information at the bottom, then checked the attached search summary.

No dissolution was recorded.

No annulment.

No divorce.

I handed the page to Rafael.

His eyes moved across it once.

Then again.

“You’re married.”

Damian swallowed.

“It isn’t what it looks like.”

I had spent four years processing public records before family debts forced me into whatever steady work I could find.

I had heard that sentence from people standing at government counters more times than I could count.

Paperwork rarely cared what something looked like.

“It says your marriage remains active,” I said.

Damian snapped his gaze toward me.

“Nobody asked you.”

Rafael’s expression hardened.

“I did.”

Adrian reached for the certificate.

Marcus appeared in the corridor and quietly stepped between us.

That stopped him.

Rafael flipped to the next page.

A bank receipt slid from the folder and fluttered to the floor.

I bent down first.

Twenty-five thousand dollars had been wired to a company called Meridian Records Consulting twelve days earlier.

The memo line said expedited archival review.

The authorization signature belonged to Sabina Virelli.

Rafael’s aunt.

The same woman who had shoved a champagne tray into my hands and reminded everyone that I was a maid.

Rafael stared at the signature.

“Why is Sabina paying someone to search for your marriage records?”

Damian’s confidence had disappeared.

“She was helping us clear up an old legal mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“My marriage to Nora ended years ago.”

“Then show me the divorce.”

Damian said nothing.

The silence answered for him.

Rafael closed the folder.

“We’re stopping the ceremony.”

Damian stepped in front of him.

“You can’t do that.”

Rafael almost smiled.

“You picked an unusual night to tell me what I can’t do.”

Adrian tried a calmer approach.

“Your sister is standing in front of nearly three hundred guests.

There are journalists outside.

Investors inside.

Senator Moretti is here.

If you turn this into a public accusation without understanding the full situation, you will humiliate Alessia and create consequences for the entire family.”

Rafael looked at him.

“If I let her marry a man who may already have a wife, what would you call that?”

Adrian’s mouth tightened.

“A matter requiring discretion.”

I finally understood why people like him loved
