wanted to “start over.”
When Martin asked whether Claire knew, Daniel said the marriage was practically over.
Martin did not believe him.
So he investigated.
The investigator found Daniel’s relationship with Mara, the secret apartment, and several debts Daniel had concealed.
Martin’s final sentence made Claire stop reading.
If Daniel chose honesty, Martin hoped the inheritance would help him build a better life.
If Daniel chose greed, Martin wanted Claire to know that somebody had seen what she had carried.
Claire put the letter down.
“What did he leave me?”
Thomas folded his hands.
“A trust valued at approximately one point eight million dollars.
Separate from Daniel’s share.
It is not dependent on the status of your marriage.”
Claire stared at him.
Money was not the first thing she felt.
The first thing was grief.
Not for Martin exactly.
For the unbearable relief of being believed by someone who was no longer alive to tell her himself.
“Does Daniel know?”
Thomas shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Daniel called Claire that evening.
His voice was cheerful.
“I need you to sign one more form.”
Claire sat at Leah’s kitchen table.
“What form?”
“Just something confirming the date you moved out.”
“Why?”
“For my records.”
Claire looked at Evelyn, who was seated across from her.
Evelyn silently shook her head.
“Send it to my attorney,” Claire said.
Daniel went quiet.
“Your attorney?”
“Yes.”
“Claire, don’t start wasting money making this hostile.”
She almost laughed.
“You called me during work, told me your mistress was pregnant with your new life, and ordered me out of my home.
I don’t think my attorney is what made this hostile.”
Another silence.
“Mara isn’t my mistress.”
“What would you prefer I call her?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what’s actually happening.”
Claire stared at Martin’s letter lying beside her.
“I’m beginning to.”
He hung up.
The next two weeks transformed Daniel’s confidence into panic.
The trustee requested documentation regarding his relationship with Mara and the joint-account transfers.
Daniel retained his own attorney.
He claimed the marriage had ended emotionally long before Martin died.
He argued that the trust clause should not apply because he had merely formalized an existing separation.
Then Claire’s attorney produced evidence that Daniel had continued presenting them as a married couple right up until Martin’s death.
There were messages Daniel had sent Claire discussing an anniversary trip.
A wedding invitation they had accepted together.
A refinancing application from six weeks earlier listing Claire as his spouse and the townhouse as their shared residence.
Most damaging was a message Daniel had sent Claire only ten days before Martin died.
Can’t wait for our beach week in October.
We need this.
Daniel had forgotten it existed.
Mara caused the next collapse herself.
During a sworn financial disclosure connected to the divorce, she was identified as the recipient of funds Daniel claimed were business expenses.
The furnished apartment had been leased in her name but paid from an account Daniel funded with transfers from marital savings.
The diamond bracelet had been purchased using a credit card Claire and Daniel jointly paid.
Daniel’s strategy changed.
He called Claire repeatedly.
She stopped answering.
Then he appeared outside Leah’s house one evening.
Claire was carrying groceries from her car when she saw him near the
