He Took Her Newborn Son, Until the Mansion’s Owner Arrived

face to Adrian.

“The babies,” she whispered.

“They are coming.”

Adrian looked at the floor first.

The antique rug beneath her feet was ruined.

“For heaven’s sake, Mara,” he said.

“Could you not make one evening about someone else?”

Veronica stepped back so quickly her bracelet struck her wineglass.

Celia turned toward the doorway and called for the housekeeper.

No one took Mara’s arm.

No one brought the car.

No one asked if she could stand.

Mara walked alone through the side hall, one hand braced against the wall as the next contraction bent her nearly double.

From the dining room, she heard Adrian clearing his throat.

Then his voice rose again.

“To new beginnings.”

The guests applauded.

Mara called an ambulance from the servants’ corridor.

By dawn, Leo and Lily had entered the world seventeen minutes apart.

Leo screamed as if offended by birth itself.

Lily arrived small and frighteningly quiet, her lips dusky until a nurse rubbed her back and coaxed a thin cry from her.

Mara had never known fear like that sound.

She had never known love like what came after.

When both babies were placed against her, something inside her settled into steel.

Adrian did not arrive until the following evening.

But before he came, she saw the video.

A notification lit her phone while Lily slept against her shoulder.

Someone had tagged Adrian at Blackwood House.

Mara opened it because some part of her still wanted the wound confirmed.

The video showed the west parlor glowing with candles.

Adrian stood beneath her grandmother’s chandelier.

Veronica faced him with one hand pressed to her mouth in a performance of surprise.

Then Adrian knelt.

He held out Celia Vale’s emerald engagement ring, the same ring Mara had redeemed from a pawn shop six weeks earlier after Adrian claimed it had been sent away for cleaning.

Veronica said yes.

The room erupted.

Adrian kissed her in the house Mara had bought, beneath the chandelier Mara had saved, in front of people who believed Mara was recovering alone because she deserved to be forgotten.

The caption beneath the video read: New beginnings in the home she saved.

Mara did not cry.

She opened the blue baby bag beside her bed and slid her hand beneath the lining.

Her fingers found the folded deed sealed in a protective sleeve, along with a certified copy of the closing statement and the key card Daniel Reed had given her.

Daniel had been her attorney since before she married Adrian, though Adrian had never bothered to remember the man’s name.

Daniel knew the inheritance.

Daniel knew the purchase.

Daniel knew every humiliation Mara had documented after the foreclosure notices began.

He had warned her not to tell Adrian until the paperwork was recorded.

That paperwork had been recorded at 8:13 the previous morning.

So when Adrian stood in the hospital room and announced he would take Leo, Mara felt terror, yes, but not helplessness.

Those were different things.

“No,” she said again.

Adrian’s nostrils flared.

“Do not start pretending you have power.”

Mara reached for the pen on the bedside table.

Adrian smiled, assuming victory.

She turned the first page of the divorce packet over and wrote slowly across the blank back.

You have been formally warned not to remove either child
