My Brother Saw the Bruises—Then He Found the Hidden Camera

determine whether she had been given anything not prescribed to her.

While they waited, Claire stared at the ceiling.

“You’re angry with me.”

Nathan looked over.

“No.”

“You should be.

I lied to you.”

“You were surviving.”

She swallowed.

“I kept thinking if I could get through the pregnancy, things would calm down.

Derek kept saying the stress was making him lose control.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“People who lose control don’t usually install cameras and move money through shell companies.”

Claire closed her eyes.

That sentence stayed with her.

Until then, part of her still thought of Derek’s violence as explosions.

Moments.

Mistakes.

Nathan had just connected them to planning.

The camera.

The money.

The insurance.

The isolation.

It wasn’t chaos.

It was a system.

Three hours later, Detective Alvarez arrived.

She sat across from the bed.

“We reviewed part of the memory card.”

Claire gripped the blanket.

“What was on it?”

Alvarez chose her words carefully.

“Several recordings show arguments between you and your husband.

In some, he appears to provoke you before the camera begins recording clearly.”

Nathan frowned.

“Meaning?”

“There are gaps.

But in at least two recordings, the device appears to activate after an argument has already started.

Mr.

Hale then repeatedly asks Mrs.

Hale why she’s behaving irrationally.”

Claire stared at her.

She remembered those nights.

Derek standing too close.

Derek whispering insults until she raised her voice.

Then suddenly becoming calm.

She had never understood the switch.

Now she did.

He had been performing for the camera.

Alvarez continued.

“There’s also a recording in which Mr.

Hale discusses how the footage could be used in a custody dispute.”

Claire’s breath caught.

“Custody?”

“Yes.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Before the baby is even born?”

“That’s why we’re concerned.”

Claire’s face went white.

“He was planning to take my baby.”

Alvarez didn’t answer immediately.

“It appears he was creating material that could potentially support a claim that you were unstable.”

The room went silent.

Claire covered her mouth.

The violence had been terrifying.

The money had been devastating.

But this cut deeper.

Derek knew the one thing she feared most was becoming a bad mother.

He had weaponized that fear before the child was even born.

Nathan stood and walked to the window.

Rain streaked the glass.

“What about the pills?”

Alvarez’s expression changed.

“Preliminary testing identified a sedating antihistamine and an anti-anxiety medication that doesn’t appear on Mrs.

Hale’s current prescription record.

We need confirmation from the lab before drawing conclusions.”

Claire stared at her.

“He told me they were supplements.”

Nathan turned around.

“How often?”

“Most nights.”

Pieces clicked together.

The heavy mornings.

The dizziness.

The confusion.

The falls.

Maybe some had not been falls at all.

Claire began shaking.

Nathan came back to the bed.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“You don’t have to understand all of it tonight.”

“I signed those papers.”

“That doesn’t mean you agreed to everything he did.”

“I let him manage the money.”

“Trust isn’t permission to steal.”

Claire started crying.

This time she didn’t apologize for it.

The investigation widened quickly.

Marissa agreed to cooperate after police confronted her with bank records.

Her role was more complicated than Claire wanted it to be.

She had accepted money and repeated Derek’s stories about Claire’s mental state.

She had witnessed
