truth without forcing me there faster than I could bear.
Sometimes I think about how close we came.
One more ten minutes on that road and we would have been in those border lanes with three tired children, hidden cash, stolen jewelry, and a script prepared in my mother’s handwriting.
One more act of obedience and our lives could have split apart in front of our kids.
Instead, my husband turned pale, trusted his instincts, and asked me to trust him before I understood why.
I did.
That choice saved us.
I used to think family was proven by how much you were willing to carry for one another.
Now I think the better question is this: who would never ask you to carry something that could destroy your children?
The answer to that question is the reason I still sleep at night.
And it is also the reason I never saw my parents the same way again.
