The officer didn’t answer her.
She looked at me.
“Ms.
Bell, this may relate to your prior report about mail access and attempted address use.”
I had made that report quietly two months earlier after a credit alert came to my email and I found a preapproved card offer in my name opened on the counter during one of my parents’ Sunday drop-ins.
I never proved who touched it.
I just documented everything and moved on.
Apparently, it hadn’t disappeared into a drawer.
Talia swallowed hard.
“This is insane,” she said, but her voice cracked on the last word.
The deputy looked toward the truck, the boxes, the open house, the family who had walked in acting like title could be bullied.
Then he asked the movers a question I still replay sometimes: “Who hired you, and what name is on the work order?”
Jace answered too fast.
And that was when I knew the worst part still hadn’t come out.
Would you post the deed and walk away?
