But I no longer mistake survival for guilt.
I no longer call cruelty care just because it came from a parent.
The footage did save my life.
More than that, it gave me proof strong enough to build a new one.
For years I thought my family was falling apart because I was sick.
The truth was harder and cleaner than that.
My family fell apart because one person chose control over love, and too many others found it easier to believe her than to look closely.
Once the camera forced everyone to look closely, the lies stopped working.
What came after was painful, but it was honest.
And honest, I learned, is a much safer place to live.
