The Pregnant Stranger Called My Husband Babe—Then Everything Cracked

his mother’s name?” I repeated.

Lauren’s hand tightened around her purse strap.

“This is disgusting,” she said, but her voice had shifted.

Less righteous.

More defensive.

“You’re trying to humiliate me because you got caught in his lies.”

“Answer the question,” my mother said flatly.

Lauren looked around the yard as if the exit might have appeared somewhere behind the gift table.

Rachel folded her arms.

“You can’t, can you?”

The woman licked her lips.

“Names don’t matter.”

“They do if you’re family,” I said.

That was the first crack.

The second came fast.

Ethan, who had been standing in stunned disbelief this whole time, suddenly narrowed his eyes at the phone in her hand.

“Show me the messages again.”

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Ethan stepped forward and Rachel handed him the phone before Lauren could stop her.

He scrolled, jaw tightening.

“This isn’t my number,” he said.

“You had more than one phone, apparently,” Lauren snapped.

He ignored her and turned the screen toward me.

The contact at the top said Ethan with a heart, but underneath it was a number I didn’t recognize.

My husband had had the same cell number since college.

I knew it by heart.

So did everyone close to him.

My sister blurted, “That’s not even his area code.”

More silence.

The air had changed now.

The crowd that had been leaning toward her story was beginning to sway back.

Lauren sensed it.

You could see her trying to regain control in real time.

“He probably used a second line,” she said quickly.

“Men like him do that.”

“Men like him?” Ethan said.

His voice was low now.

Controlled.

Dangerous in a way I had rarely heard.

Not because he was about to lose his temper, but because he had finally moved out of shock and into focus.

“You picked the wrong family,” my mother said.

Lauren turned toward me again, trying to reestablish the emotional center.

“Listen to me.

I didn’t want this.

I was trying to protect myself.

I’m pregnant too.

Do you know what it feels like to realize the man you married is building another life behind your back?”

It was a good line.

A devastating line.

Maybe in another setting it would have worked.

But now I was watching her, really watching her, and I saw what didn’t fit.

The tears came without redness.

The outrage arrived on cue, then vanished the second she needed to think.

She had facts, but only broad ones.

He worked in logistics.

We lived in Columbus.

We were expecting a girl.

Those were details that could be found, overheard, or pulled from social media.

And then a memory hit me so hard I nearly sat back down.

Two weeks earlier, Ethan had gotten upset about something online.

Not angry—uneasy.

He had shown me a fake Facebook profile using his photos.

The account had been taken down after he reported it, and he brushed it off, saying scammers stole pictures all the time.

We laughed nervously and moved on.

My pulse started pounding in my ears.

“Did you meet him online?” I asked.

Lauren looked at me carefully.

Too carefully.

“That’s not your concern.”

“It is if you’re standing at my baby shower accusing my husband of being
