They Mocked Her Dress Until They Learned Whose Wife She Was

voice remained calm.

“What is your name?”

The woman hesitated.

“Lila Mercer.”

That meant something.

Alexandra could tell from the slight shift in the manager’s face and the renewed attention in the room.

Mercer.

Old money.

Charity boards.

Society pages.

Xavier nodded once, like he was filing away a number.

Then he looked at the woman in white.

“And yours?”

“Vanessa Cole.”

The third answered before he could ask.

“Harper Sloane.”

He studied them in turn.

“I know exactly who you are.”

Vanessa seized on that.

“Then you know this can be handled privately.

We all know each other.

There’s no reason to make a spectacle.”

Alexandra almost laughed at the irony.

No reason to make a spectacle.

After what they had just done to her in the center of a crowded lounge.

Xavier slid an arm lightly around Alexandra’s shoulders, not possessive, just steady.

“You made a spectacle when you surrounded my wife and destroyed her clothing in public.

Now we handle the consequences in public too.”

The manager cleared his throat.

“Mr.

Vaughn, the private dining room is prepared for your anniversary dinner.

Perhaps—”

Xavier did not take his eyes off the women.

“Cancel the room.”

The manager looked stricken.

“Sir?”

“Cancel it.

And close every tab associated with these three guests.

Permanently revoke their membership access to all Vaughn Hospitality properties.” He paused.

“Also, I want a formal incident report filed tonight with video attached.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’m entirely serious.”

Lila tried a different approach.

“Xavier, please.

We didn’t know who she was.”

This time his voice cooled another degree.

“That is not a defense.

It is the confession.”

No one said anything.

He continued, “You believed she had no power in this room, so you felt free to humiliate her.

That tells me far more about you than an apology ever could.”

Harper stepped forward, her expression frantic now.

“We’ve all been drinking.

It got out of hand.

We can pay for the dress.”

Alexandra finally spoke.

“It was never about the dress.”

All three women looked at her.

The room did too.

Her embarrassment had not vanished, but something inside her had straightened.

She pulled Xavier’s jacket more securely around her shoulders and lifted her chin.

“You looked at me and decided I was disposable,” she said.

“You decided that because I wasn’t wearing labels you recognized, I must be the sort of person you could mock.

You weren’t joking.

You were testing whether anyone would stop you.”

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Alexandra went on, surprising even herself with the steadiness of her voice.

“And the part that should embarrass you most is not that I’m Xavier’s wife.

It’s that you would have been perfectly comfortable doing this to any woman you thought had less than you.”

The manager stared at the floor.

Several people near the bar exchanged glances that said they agreed.

The bartender gave Alexandra the smallest nod.

Vanessa’s composure finally cracked.

“I said I’m sorry.”

“No,” Alexandra replied.

“You said you were sorry you didn’t know who I belonged to.

Those are not the same thing.”

The sentence hit harder than any raised voice could have.

Lila looked close to tears.

Harper looked close to bolting for the door.

Vanessa looked like she
