La lettre de mon père.

Et une copie de l’accord que Julian avait signé six ans avant notre mariage.

Je n’avais plus besoin de les regarder chaque jour.

Je savais désormais ce qu’ils signifiaient.

Mon père n’avait pas seulement essayé de protéger mon argent.

Il avait essayé de protéger mon droit de rester propriétaire de ma propre vie.

Julian avait voulu cinquante pour cent de mon entreprise.

Ma mère avait voulu réécrire les volontés de mon père.

Ma sœur avait voulu croire la version qui excusait ses frustrations.

Pendant longtemps, j’avais cru que garder la paix signifiait céder un peu à chacun.

Le tribunal m’a appris l’inverse.

Parfois, la paix commence lorsque l’on cesse enfin de négocier avec ceux qui considèrent nos limites comme une invitation à insister.

Ce matin-là, j’ai fermé le tiroir, ouvert mon ordinateur et repris le travail.

Pour la première fois depuis huit mois, personne d’autre ne tenait la plume.
