Ils ont humilié le mauvais vieil homme devant tout le restaurant

la forme de formulaires, de témoignages répétés, de longues réunions, de factures remboursées et de décisions rendues des mois après que la colère avait disparu.

Mais il savait aussi reconnaître une chose plus simple : la dignité restaurée.

Le restaurant reprit son rythme normal.

La table fut réparée.

Le verre fut remplacé.

Les clients cessèrent de parler de l’incident.

Daniel continua d’y déjeuner de temps en temps.

Toujours seul.

Toujours avec sa canne.

Et souvent au même endroit.

La première fois qu’un nouveau serveur le vit appuyer sur le petit appareil noir pour vérifier sa batterie, il lui demanda en souriant : « C’est quoi ? Une télécommande secrète ? »

Daniel observa l’objet, puis le serveur.

« Quelque chose comme ça.

»

Le jeune homme rit et repartit vers la cuisine.

Daniel sourit à son tour.

Sur le parking, aucune voiture noire ne l’attendait cette fois.

Il n’en avait pas besoin.

Sa canne reposait contre la banquette, exactement là où il l’avait posée lui-même.

Et personne, désormais, ne la prenait pour un signe de faiblesse.
